Dear Mike,
I remember just a little bit. First time I remember going down that way was not really to Greencastle but with just Mama and we stayed for a while with somebody in what seemed like an apartment. Seemed like it was upstairs and I remember flowers or plants outside. Possibly Mother, Daddy and you came down later. Not sure how we got there in the first place. Then I think we stayed with at someone's farm, possibly McGinnis?

You know that Covie and Connie were McGinnis'...their mom was a Glenn...Leona and her husband, Kiah....(mother pronounced it Kier...uncle Kier) was the son of our grandmother, Isabella Hudnall, second marriage...she had ten kids with out grandfather James Thomas Johnson, and five more 4 daughters & one son with Kiah's father, Hezikiah McGinnis...busy grandmother she was....
They had corn which I remember feeding to chickens. This was not Burly's farm but a much smaller farm. Vaguely remember sleeping upstairs in the house. It was not in Greencastle but somewhere else.
When we actually went to Greencastle it was as a family. Don't remember Mama going with us. We may have gone once or twice for vacation with Daddy's small wooden motor boat.

I remember that boat...looked like it was made of plywood and stained really brown...was fun
I remember the really long gravel/dirt road going into there (probably paved 4-lane now?).
Still two lanes and blacktopped
At one point it would get really rough and rocky going over an old dry creek bed that Mother called "the branch".
That bridge is still there and over a little and the road quits
Then you would go by an old cabin where "Porter" and his old wife lived. Don't know who they were.
Hummm wonder who that is? do you remember going by a road where aunt Okie lived? Remembering that someone saying that is where aunt Okie lives...aunt Okie is part of the mama's Taylor family....aunt Okie's husband is part of the McGinnis family
Then you would be at Covie's house on the right and possibly a motel like structure where we stayed. I remember the motel or whatever was two stories and from the top you could see over the road to a tobacco field.
All I remember is a sidewalk from Covie house to the place where we stayed...remember spitting up phymn between the walks...but they have built up between the houses and you don't see that walkway....if that is the same place
I remember Covie (or possibly sp Cova?) had a husband who was kind of a shadowy figure we never met. Seemed like his name was "Albert"
here is rootsweb.com has...I always thought Albert too http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=faunnna&id=I51785
but I may be confusing him with May's
Mae Morgan?...the Morgan family is from Warren Co. too
daughter Audrey's husband (also shadowy). You say their last name was "Runner"? I do remember visiting with Connie and Burly later in the 60's and Covie and her husband (still the same guy, not sure) were living in a trailer along 31 (Dixie Hwy) and running a miniature golf course.
when was this?
I also remember a well across the road from the Covie's house and a mule in the pasture which was also called Porter, I think. I remember there were steep hills behind the house and a lot of rocks that were castle-like and goats on the hills. There seemed to be an unlimited supply of Neihi grape and orange there out of a cooler. (Probably rotted our teeth.) Remember also a faded billboard across the road advertising "Squirt" soft drink. Remember Daddy laughing at it and saying it reminded him of diarrhea.
funny....lol
Continuing on down the road past the motel you eventually get to the river with a ferry boat crossing it with the lock and dam to the left, upstream a bit.
I remember it being a lot of fun (actually more fun than Florida) and going there is a very fond memory. There was a spring going into the river and I remember the first time we were down there Happy jumped in the river and thought he could walk on it. He sank like a rock and was down for a while. Then he popped up and swam over to the boat and Daddy pulled him into the boat. That scared me. Didn't know all dogs knew how to swim.

funny about happy...seems like i was there when that happened...
I remember going up and down that river in the wooden boat was a lot of fun. Remember baiting the "trotline" with tobacco horn worms which made Covie ill. But we caught the big fish the next morning. Looked though most of our pictures and still can't find the picture of that fish that I remember. Still need to look in one other place. Remember that Covie had a fish fry for us before we left. Seemed like lots of other people were there too, like neighbors.
I just now looked at Greencastle, Ky on google earth. It still looks pretty much the same. Didn't realize the "Greencastle" is actually a small town where the gravel road (Greencastle Road) branches off to the west going over to the river. The town of Greencastle is not actually on the river! Didn't know that. Can see the small road and still not many houses along it. Can also see where Covie's house is and the "motel" that we stayed in. (Are they the same?) Can see where the ferry crossed the river but whatever road continued on across the river is no longer there. Can see the dam is still there. Can't see enough detail to see if the old mill site with the arch is still there.

was that a mill? thought that was the damn
That's where we made several pictures. The gravel road just seems to eventually dead end a few miles past the dam.
Seems like I remember Mother saying that their house was somewhere near the dam but not sure.
I do remember one visit and some one named Rose Ann. I guess it was Covie's daughter. Possibly that was when that picture of Daddy eating chicken was made and somehow Gaynell was there too I think. That must have been at Connie and Burly's. Not sure if we were at Greencastle then too or not.
Not sure what else I might remember... ??? Probably more than you care :)).

No enjoyed your thoughts...wished I knew more or had mama to ask all this stuff...there is a map at the Ky library made about 1880...and shows the land owners...shows Green Castle and out beyond it shows D.B. Stephens...I am assuming that is our g grandfather who we are named after... thanks for the email love, Mike
